The Student Experience

Not every student will play Rachmaninoff, but every student will have every opportunity to do their very best.

Students performing with the Albany Symphony Orchestra

To do this, we help our students to:

 Develop critical listening skills

  • Critique peers in Piano Class
  • Attend concerts and recitals

Experience broad musical variety

  • Perform duets and trios (there's always someone ready to pair up and there are plenty of pianos)
  • Learn classical as well as non-classical music from faculty trained in multiple genres
  • Take part in typical and theme recitals, including Baroque, Jazz, Halloween, and Duet recitals
  • Be a hero to the younger students by assisting in their performances

Take part in In-Studio Evaluations as well as New York State Music Teacher Association Evaluations

  • Reduce boredom, increase musical versatility, and help students work to goals by using mini-milestones
  • Obtain focused, detailed feedback from experienced adjudicators
  • Build confidence through low pressure/no pressure, behind closed-door performance opportunities

Work and perform with professional musicians

  • Pianists trained in many genres and styles
  • Orchestral musicians
  • Jazz and swing musicians

Meet and work with composers

  • Joseph Fennimore
  • Paul Gerike
  • Donald Sosin

Be part of The Music Studio Kids

  • Ensemble Orff performances
  • Broadway, Folk, Pop, and Patriotic Singing
  • Acrobats and clowning

Similar opportunities and others appropriate for their age are avilable to younger students. Ice cream cake recitals, ensemble recitals, Fun with Creative Keyboard, and the end-of-year show at the Palace Theatre, complete with costumes, scenery, and the chance to perform side-by-side with older students, are just some of the highlights. All of these activities also help students learn to work toward a goal, learn more than one song at a time, and begin to learn the idea of “polishing” their final effort.

Music is fun, but also complex.  We prepare our students for that one song, one opportunity at a time.
